Why It’s Important to Exfoliate Your Skin!
Proper cleansing, moisturizing, and sunscreen are important for great looking skin, but if you’re not exfoliating, your skin isn’t as healthy as it could be. Exfoliation is one of the most underestimated
and neglected skin care procedures, yet it has the greatest impact on our skin’s health and appearance. Do it, and your skin will look and feel cleaner, fresher and smoother.
What is Exfoliation?
Exfoliation is the process of scrubbing off dead skin cells to expose and reveal fresh, new, and “younger” skin below. There are two types of exfoliators, physical and chemical.
Physical exfoliators are products that physically rub off dead skin cells, usually with the help of our hands. Everything from salt and sugar based scrubs to exfoliating brushes fall into the physical category.
Chemical exfoliators include facial peels and products that slough off dead skin using active (but not necessarily “scrubby”) ingredients like alpha-hydroxy acids (AHAs), and beta-hydroxy acids (BHAs). These usually come in cream form and loosen up the dry cells on the skin’s surface, allowing them to fall away.
Who Should Exfoliate?
Everyone! Yes, men too.
Why is Exfoliation Important?
As we age, the body is slower to shed skin cells and generate new ones. Old skin cells pile up on the surface of the skin and can leave it looking rough, dry, and dull. Furthermore, the build-up of dead skin cells can result in excess oil and clogged pores, leading to blemishes and acne.
Exfoliation not only keeps your skin clean, it also opens the way for moisturizing products to penetrate more deeply into the skin, which makes them more effective. For men, exfoliation not only cleans, it exposes your beard hair follicles which reduces ingrown hairs, making for the perfect pre-shave treatment.
Manual exfoliation on a regular basis is by far the most popular form of exfoliating as opposed to chemical exfoliation.
Manual scrubs for your body are not recommended as facial scrubs. Your body can tolerate a stronger exfoliant, so choose your products carefully.
If you use a manual exfoliating scrub, choose one like our Sugar Whipped Body Scrub that is formulated with sugar which has round granules.
Commercial Scrubs can be made with jagged, rough granules and could injure your skin. Be gentle with the scrub, a light touch is all you need to slough off the dead skin cells. Any more than that and you’re likely to irritate your skin.
How Often Should You Exfoliate?
When choosing a facial scrub, knowing your skin type is the first and most importance step before starting an exfoliating regimen. Your skin type will determine which type of products are best for you so you’ll get optimal results and avoid harming your skin.
People with drier, more sensitive skin should only exfoliate a few times a week. Those with less sensitive skin types may exfoliate every other day. Try out a routine and pay attention to how your skin reacts.
While exfoliating has year-round benefits, as the weather gets colder and the humidity levels drop, more cells dry out and accumulate on the surface.
