Do your moisturizers, creams, and body butters have what it takes to really improve the health of your skin?
The main goal of a moisturizer is to hold water in the outermost layer of your skin, but moisturizers can also serve as a barrier to protect that layer from damage. The ingredients that help moisturizers accomplish these two goals are humectants, emollients, and occlusives.
Humectants take moisture from the air and hold it in your skin. They rejuvenate the skin and smooth out or soften scaly, thick skin. Humectants are especially good for dry skin, but because they take moisture from the air. Humectants used on our products include glycerin, dl-panthenol (Pro-Vitamin B5), and honeyquat.
Emollients are the ingredients that are soothing and moisturizing to our skin. Emolliency is a vital part of our skin's needs because they relieve some of the discomfort of dry skin and helps plasticize the skin. So we want emollient ingredients in every moisturizer. Oil based emollients such as avocado, evening primrose, rice bran, soybean, sunflower, and olive oils, as well as butter based emollients such as cocoa, kokum, shea and mango, provide moisture by filling in spaces between skin cells where fat cells used to be.
Occlusives prevent water loss from our skin. We want to trap in that water and prevent it from evaporating from our skin, and protect our skin from further damage while it repairs itself from physical assaults of the day. Butters such as cocoa, shea, mango, and others are great barrier ingredients, protecting your skin from water loss and from further damage from the outside world. Each butter has its own benefits, but the key is that they stay on the skin.
In order to improve the look and feel of your skin and to keep it that way, your moisturizers, lotions, creams and body butters need to be formulated with all three of these types of ingredients.
