The Importance of Knowing Your Skin Type

We all, men and women, care about how our skin feels and looks and most of us have something that we would love to change about it.  And, while there is nothing we can do to change the type of skin that we have, there are ways to manage our skin problems so that it always looks its best.

In order to determine what skin care regimen is best suited for you, your first step is knowing how to determine your skin type. If you don’t know your skin type, you won’t be able to properly care for your skin, which can lead to irritation, blemishes, dry skin and clogged pores.

There are a million different ways to figure this out, but at Natural Skin Revival we have chosen to follow the Baumann skin type indicator (BSTI). The BSTI offers an interesting framework for thinking about our skin.

There are four main categories:

  • Dry (D) or Oily (O)
  • Resistant (R) or Sensitive (S) which includes acne, rosacea, allergic or stinging
  • Pigmented (P) or Non-Pigmented (N) (age spots and sun exposure)
  • Wrinkled (W) or Non-Wrinkled or Tight (T)

Your skin will fall into one of the two categories, and you’ll have four letters indicating your skin type. For instance, I’m and oily-sensitive-pigmented-non-wrinkled person (OSPT).

Here are the primary characteristics of each skin type:

Oily Skin – Characterizes by enlarged pores and excessive sebum that generates shine on the surface that blocks the pores and causes blackheads and blemishes. You may, on occasion, experience some tightness.  Here are our product selections for Oily Skin Types:

Facial Cleansers, Facial Toner, Facial Moisturizer, Facial Scurb, Pore Minimizing Mask, Creamy Eye Treatment or consider our starter pack Go Natural Facial Cleansing Pack

Dry Skin – Often feels tight after cleansing, is prone to fine lines, flakes easily and develops red patches. Dry skin also tends to feel rough because it lacks moisture.  Here are our product selections for Dry Skin types:

Facial Cleansers, Facial Toner, Facial Moisturizer, Facial Scurb, Nutrient Rich Mask, Creamy Eye Treatment or consider our starter pack Go Natural Facial Cleansing Pack.

Sun-Damaged Skin – Characterized by tight, leathery skin, fine wrinkles, changes in the skin’s pigment, sagging skin tissue and broken capillaries.

Facial Cleansers, Facial Toner, Facial Moisturizer, Facial Scurb, Nutrient Rich Mask, Creamy Eye Treatment or consider our starter pack Go Natural Facial Cleansing Pack.

Combination Skin – A combination of oily and dry skin. Oily skin is most commonly found on the forehead, nose and chin, while dry skin is frequently a problem on the cheeks. Occasional breakouts and larger-than-normal pores on the nose are also frequently found on individuals with combination skin.  Here are our product recommendations for Combination Skin types:

Facial Cleansers, Facial Toner, Facial Moisturizer, Facial Scurb, Pore Minimizing Mask, or Nutrient Rich Mask, Creamy Eye Treatment or consider our starter pack Go Natural Facial Cleansing Pack

Sensitive Skin – Characterized by thin, delicate skin and small pores. Sensitive skin is also easily irritated by harsh soaps and medications, reactive to stress and sensitive to changing weather patterns. Rashes, allergic reactions and easily flushed skin are also common.  Here are our product recommendations for Sensitive Skin types:

Facial Cleansers, Facial Toner, Facial Moisturizer, Facial Scurb, Nutrient Rich Mask, Creamy Eye Treatment or consider our starter pack Go Natural Facial Cleansing Pack.
